What's Your Sign?

Image
The design for the street sign has been finalized and the sign is now in production.  One of the mistakes we made at our old facility was using the club logo on our sign.  While the logo on our old sign had a curling stone on it, it wasn't very prominent.  People driving by would have to read the sign, which didn't help to drive awareness. We are hopeful that the new sign will immediately make people thing of curling without having to read a word.  It has the rings, a stone and a sweeper.  We also wanted to show inclusion by having both a man and a woman on the sign.  This sign checks all of the boxes for us. (simulated image) We did consider what many clubs are doing which is not using the word "Club" but using "Center".  The driving factor for us to use the word club was that we already get 2-3 calls a day from people wanting to come out an try curling thinking that we operate like a bowling alley.  We felt using the word Center would

The Transform(ation) is beginning (see what I did there?)

On Monday, March 18th we met with an engineering technician to map out what was needed for the electrical service upgrade. Currently we have single phase service going to the northeast corner of the warehouse.  There are two  meters.  We believe one is for the warehouse and one is for the house (but we'll need to confirm this). If the upgraded service goes to this same location, we will have significant expense to run power to the southwest side of the building where the chiller will go.  We were hoping, best case, to get service to the northwest corner of the building to reduce the distance we need to run wires (especially the larger more expensive wires that are needed for the 400 amp service).  Essentially, the thinking was, bring 600 amp service to the northwest corner of the building, backfeed 200 amps to the existing box and run 400 amps to the chiller. Turns out that AEP is considering putting a transformer on a pad just next to where the chiller will go!  This sho

The Move-In has begun (sort of)

After losing the Hoosier Cup to the Circle City Curling Club on Saturday, March 16th (one shot would have swung the outcome in our favor), some chose to drown their sorrows at the bar while a few others chose to look forward instead and begin moving items to the new facility. Rob Binns and Mandy Gangwer packed up some of the larger items from the club's kitchen and office.  With the assistance of Craig Fischer the items were moved into the attic at the new facility. The first of many trips!  Stay tuned for details on how you can help with the move.

Ah, the smell of grinder in the morning

At long last demolition work has begun at the old facility. On Saturday, March 8th, Chris Dennison and Steve Bell began the demolition, removing the drywall and framing on the front of the room in the back of the warehouse.  Most importantly, the carefully took down the garage doors that were in hoth walls of that room. Anyone want to buy a lightly used garage door or two?  Seriously...we're looking to sell these. On Sunday, March 9 work continued. A small group of members led by our construction expert, David Michael of Mike Kinder and Sons (and the Sunday night league), compeleted the demolition of the back room (excluding the wall that we will re-usej.  Additionally the pegboards on both side walls was removed. Participating were Andrew Nottingham, Jeff Bockelman, Adam Vetter, Karen Goss, Matt Gotsch, Craig Fischer and Preston Short. David and Matt worked from the lift knocking down drywall and then using the grinder to cut the studs. The rest of the volunteer
