The catwalks have begun!

Progress continues.

After the demolition last week, the new ADA Changing Room, Kitchen and Beer Cooler have been framed out.

And drywalling has begun.  Just one side so far until the final electrical inspection occurs which should be within the next week or so.

Also, very importantly, the chiller successfully made the move over from the old club.

On Saturday this weekend, a regular cadence of work at the facility has begun.  We are looking at working 3 days per week (Saturday 9 am - 3 pm, Monday nights 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm, and Wednesday nights 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm).

We have about 6 weeks to get the dehumidifier, heaters, duct sox, lights, low-e ceiling, ice room painting, catwalks and sealing of the pond completed before Jim Hibbard arrives mid-July for the ice mat installation.

Saturday's work

Andrew Nottingham continued the work of dusting the joists.  Andrew and Andy Downs have been working their way through the warehouse.  The goal is to reduce the possibility of dust getting on the ice surface by cleaning the joists while we can still access them with a scissor lift.

Greg Eigner worked on sealing cracks in the cinder blocks.

We had the lumber delivered and that needed to be moved into the club.  A few hundred 2x8s in various lengths (8 ft, 12 ft and 16 ft) and a whole load of plywood.  Where is Bruce Hearon when you need him to move plywood?

Joe Copeland,. Adam Vetter, Bobby Slocum, Mark DeWitt, and Bob Leckron did the majority of the heavy lifting getting this all into the club.  One thing we learned from last time is to put everything on pallets.  John Sherman lent us a pallet jack, so with this approach moving stacks of wood (which we will inevitably have to do) is a minor task.  I still get abuse about the number of times I had Bruce Hearon move plywood at the old facility during construction.

With the drywalling in progress (just one side until the final electrical inspection occurs), we could get started on the catwalks about the ice.  We have to what we do carefully because there is still drywalling, mudding, taping and painting to do and we need to be able to get lifts to certain areas.  Unfortunately, we don't have the luxury of time to wait until these are completed before getting started.

Lynn Gilmore cleared out the external walls by moving insulation and other junk we had along the walls to the center of the ice room.  She also disposed of all the ballasts that were lying around, cleared out the southwest corner of the ice tech room for the electricians to begin their work.

So, until we  have all of the work that requires lifts along certain walls completed we will focus primarily on the catwalks along the north and south walls (the long walls - 160 ft).

Tom Kaufman provided, yet again, key construction expertise, in getting the 2x8s that run along these cinderblock walls mounted using 3" masonry lags and an impact drill.  He also ripped the requisite 2x8s at an angle for the ramps that we will need for the fire exits.  To explain, the ice room will have the ice surface in the middle and catwalks all around.  The catwalks are constructed of 2x8s with plywood decking on top.  Our fire exits are, of course, at the level of the warehouse floor.  To allow those in wheelchairs to safely exit the building in case of a file, we need to ramp down to each of the door on the north side of the ice room.  Additionally, we need to ramp up to the catwalks from the warm room door (on at least one side).

Bobby Slocum and Bob Leckron began mounting the outside 2x8s on the south wall after some guidance from Tom Kaufman and by the end of the day had made it just past halfway.

Bob Leckron and Mark DeWitt mounted the outside 2x8 on the steel stud wall on the east side of the ice room as well.

Jeff Bockelman and Mark DeWitt cut the 8 ft 2x8s as needed for the across catwalk supports.

Andy Buuck began constructing the south catwalk using a nail gun.  The goal will be to complete this catwalk framing by the end of the week so that we can start painting the south wall.

Next up....more catwalks and painting.  Stay tuned for updates.
